The Cotswolds (/ ˈ k ɒ t s w oʊ l d z / KOTS-wohldz, /-w ə l d z /-⁠wəldz) are an area in south central and south west England comprising the Cotswold Hills, a range of rolling hills that rise from the meadows of the upper Thames to an escarpment, known as the Cotswold Edge, above the Severn Valley and Evesham Vale. The area is defined by the bedrock of Jurassic limestone that creates a Coordinates: 51°48′N 2°2′W / °N .   If you think the Cotswolds look familiar, you’re probably right. This region of rolling hills and pastureland—England’s largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty—has served as Hollywood and the BBC’s stand-in for scenic British countryside for decades. Undulating gracefully across six counties, the Cotswolds region is a delightful tangle of golden villages, thatched cottages, evocative churches and honey-coloured mansions. In it was designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, surpassed for size in England by the Lake District alone. Cotswolds, also called Cotswold Hills, ridge of limestone hills extending for about 50 miles (80 km) across south-central Cotswolds are part of the Jurassic uplands that cross the country from southwest to northeast. The Cotswolds escarpment rises steeply from the clay vale of the lower River Severn and its tributary, the River Avon (Upper Avon), and slopes gradually eastward.
